St. Benedict of Nursia (c. 480–547 AD) is regarded as the father of Western monasticism. Dissolution with the immoral culture in Rome where he was attending school, he became a hermit living in a cave for several years. A community of monks asked him to join them as their abbott. He agreed, and eventually established several monasteries in the region of Subiaco. Each monastery was led by an abbot, following a common rule of life. Around 529 AD, he founded the famous monastery of Monte Cassino, which became the center of Benedictine life and the birthplace of the Benedictine Rule.
St. Benedict’s Rule is still followed by Benedictine monks and nuns worldwide. St. Benedict's feast day is celebrated on July 11 in the Roman Catholic Church. Benedict’s life exemplifies dedication to faith, community, and the pursuit of a balanced spiritual life. His stories, particularly the miraculous interventions, highlight his sanctity and the divine protection that surrounded him.
The artwork includes all of the prayers and imagery from the front and back of the St. Benedict Medal.

God’s protection of St. Benedict: The Raven and the Snake
The top of the board features am image of a raven flying away with a piece of bread. After St. Benedict became an Abbot a jealous priest tried to kill him with poisoned bread. St. Benedict prayed over his meal and a raven swooped down and took the bread from him before he could eat it. On another occasion, some fellow monks attempted to kill St. Benedict by poisoning his wine. When St. Benedict prayed a blessing over his poisoned cup it instantly shattered.
