St. Joan of Arc, born around 1412 in Domrémy, France; came from a humble peasant family and was deeply religious from a young age. At the age of 13, Joan had a vision of St. Michael, St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Margaret of Antioch that lead her to support Charles VII and take up arms to drive the English out of France during the Hundred Years' War.
In 1429, Joan convinced Charles VII to allow her to lead a French army to the besieged city of Orléans. Dressed in armor and carrying a banner, Joan was struck by a crossbow bolt in the shoulder. Despite being wounded, she returned to the battlefield and continued to inspire her troops, ultimately leading them to a crucial victory that turned the tide of the war in favor of the French.
Joan continued to play a significant role in several other military campaigns, leading to the coronation of Charles VII at Reims Cathedral in July 1429. However, in 1430, she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English. Joan was put on trial for charges including heresy and witchcraft.
Despite her compelling defense, Joan was found guilty and sentenced to death. On May 30, 1431, she was burned at the stake in Rouen at the age of 19. As she faced her imminent death, Joan asked for a crucifix to be held before her eyes so that she could die looking upon it. A sympathetic English soldier, moved by her courage and faith, crafted a small, makeshift cross from two pieces of wood and handed it to her. Joan kissed the improvised crucifix and placed it in her dress. Additionally, she requested a priest to hold a church crucifix high so she could see it as she was dying.
In 1456, a retrial ordered by Pope Callixtus III declared her innocent of all charges. Joan of Arc was canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church in 1920. She remains a symbol of courage, faith, and patriotism, and is considered one of France's greatest heroines.
