The original artwork for this board is inspired by the Virgin De Guadalupe. The Virgin De Guadalupe comes directly from an apparition of Mary Mother Of God in the Americas in 1531. The board features an image of Our Lady and the Angel Gabriel at her feet. The back ground has Castilian Roses just like the ones in the apparition.

In Mexico in the first half of the 16th century there were 2 truly miraculous events: The Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire led by Hernán Cortés and the miraculous apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the Aztec convert, St. Juan Diego.

1519, The Aztec’s were preparing for what they said was “The return of the white God” with the gruesome ritual sacrifice of 5000 of their own people. This was Cortés’s introduction to the Aztecs when he landed on the shores of what is now Mexico. As a devout Catholic there was no way his expedition could reconcile with this evil so a battle ensued. Cortés bravely lead his army of 3000 Catholic soldiers against 30,000 Aztec warriors. Miraculously Cortés prevailed resulting in the conversion of millions of pagans to the Catholic Faith. Cortés attributed all of his success to God.

In 1531, the Spanish and the native Mexicans were at odds with each other. A simple devout Mexican convert, Juan Diego experienced a series of visions of the Virgin Mary on the hill of Tepeyac, near what is now Mexico City. These apparitions are said to have taken place over four days, from December 9 to December 12. The Virgin Mary, speaking in Juan Diego's native Nahuatl language, identified herself as the "Mother of the very true deity" and asked Juan Diego to request that the local bishop, Juan de Zumárraga, build a shrine in her honor on the hill.

The Miraculous Image

When Juan Diego conveyed the Virgin's message to the bishop, he was met with skepticism and asked for a sign to prove the authenticity of the apparitions. The Virgin Mary instructed Juan Diego to gather Castilian roses, which were not native to the region and were blooming miraculously in December. He collected the roses in his tilma (cloak) and brought them to the bishop. When he unfolded the tilma before the bishop, the roses fell to the ground, revealing an image of the Virgin Mary imprinted on the fabric. This image is know as the Virgin De Guadalupe. The creation of the image can only be attributed to God.
